Capturing Love at the Falls: Meghan & Robert’s March Engagement Session

There is something undeniably romantic about the quiet, muted tones of Central New York in the early spring. A couple of weeks ago, I met up with Meghan and Robert for their engagement session at Pratt’s Falls Park in Jamesville, NY. While late March in Syracuse can be a gamble with the weather, we lucked out. No sunshine, but it was a perfectly overcast, cool afternoon. We were all just grateful that the Upstate New York clouds decided to hold back the rain and snow for our shoot!
Exploring the Woods of Jamesville
We started the session among the towering trees that line the upper trails of the park.
It turns out I had the best possible guide for this portion of the day. Meghan is a SUNY ESF forestry alumna, and her passion for the outdoors was infectious. As we moved through the woods, she was able to identify nearly every tree we passed. Having that personal connection to the landscape made the session feel even more grounded and meaningful.
Going Off-Trail for the Perfect Shot
After capturing some beautiful moments in the woods, we headed toward the main attraction: the waterfall. Pratt's Falls is one of the most stunning waterfalls in Central New York, but we wanted to find a perspective that felt unique to them. An area where they've hiked together before...
We decided to leave the beaten path and venture down into the ravine near the river. It was a bit of a rugged trek—and I’ll admit, climbing back up the steep embankment afterward was definitely our workout for the week! However, the results were more than worth the effort. Down by the rushing water, surrounded by the raw beauty of the gorge, Meghan and Robert really let their personalities shine. The contrast of the rocky ravine against the flowing river provided a dramatic, timeless backdrop for their engagement photos.
Looking Toward the Big Day
Meghan and Robert are such a genuine, adventurous couple. Whether we were discussing local dendrology or navigating the slippery terrain of the ravine, they didn't miss a beat. Their energy made the entire session a blast, and it reminded me why I love being a wedding photographer in CNY.
I am so excited to trade the cool March woods for the warmth of summer when I photograph their wedding this July! If their engagement session was any indication, their wedding day is going to be filled with laughter, beautiful scenery, and a whole lot of love.
